World Wine 2005 Indaba Chardonnay

Western Cape, South Africa Indaba Chardonnay is a pleasant discovery from an old friend in South Africa. A few years ago, Cape Indaba Sauvignon Blanc was one of the top-selling wines at Select Wines. Indaba and importer Cape Classics contribute to South AfricaÂ’s emergence in wine via their Indaba Scholarship, awarded to disadvantaged students with a passion to study viticulture and enology. Indaba Chardonnay is straw yellow in color, offering aromas of pear and pineapple with hints of vanilla and peaches. The wine is medium in body with good acidity and flavors of crisp green apples, citrus, orange peel, lemon, hints of butterscotch. Fermented mostly in stainless steel, 7% was fermented in French oak barrels. No malolactic fermentation. Nice balance of fruit and acidity. The grapes come from 15-year-old vines in alluvial sandstone and lime soils. This refreshing Chardonnay has a long, clean finish.
